Universal Staples
These never miss. If you only ever pick six magic items in a campaign, these six pay the rent.
A bonus to AC and every saving throw. The single best Uncommon item ever printed.
Retires encumbrance forever. Every party needs one.
Advantage on initiative and Perception checks. Wins ambushes both ways.
Concentration-free flight at the lowest possible rarity. Bypasses half of all terrain.
Stacks with Cloak of Protection. Together they keep you alive forever.
Forces disadvantage on the first attack against you each round. Effectively halves boss damage.
5e magic items are rated on a five-tier rarity scale. Common items show up around tier 1, Uncommon in tiers 1 to 2, Rare in tiers 2 to 3, Very Rare in tier 3, and Legendary at tier 4. A well-run campaign rarely hands out anything above the player's tier. Knowing what to ask for keeps the conversation with your DM grounded.
A 5e character can attune to three magic items at once. Cloak of Protection and Ring of Protection together eat two of those slots permanently. That third slot is where build identity lives. A Wizard puts a Wand of the War Mage there. A Paladin puts a Holy Avenger or a Defender there. A Rogue puts a Cloak of the Bat or a Ring of Free Action there. The picker has a toggle for items that need no attunement at all, which is useful when your three slots are already locked.
A few items work on every character. Cloak of Protection, Bag of Holding, Sentinel Shield, and Winged Boots are picks anyone can defend. After those, the math gets specific. A Strength-based fighter pulls more value out of a Belt of Hill Giant Strength than a Bard ever could. A Pearl of Power means almost nothing to a Barbarian. The class column in the picker captures that gap.
The phrase "magic item wishlist" sounds informal. In practice, most experienced DMs ask for one. They want to give players gear that lights up the build, not random loot from a table. The wishlist link this tool generates is the version of that conversation that takes thirty seconds instead of half an hour. Paste it into your group chat. Your DM will appreciate having a starting point.
The picker recommends from items in the System Reference Document 5.1. That is the freely licensed subset of the official magic item list, which includes most of the classic gear: Cloak of Protection, Bag of Holding, Holy Avenger, Vorpal Sword, Staff of the Magi, and around 130 others. It does not cover items published only in specific adventure books or supplements. For those, your DM is the source of truth.
Cloak of Protection is the consensus best Uncommon pick. It grants a flat bonus to AC and every saving throw, works on any class, and stays relevant from level 1 through level 20. Bag of Holding and Sentinel Shield are very close runners-up.
Three at a time. Choose your three to cover offense, defense, and utility. Items that require no attunement (Bag of Holding, Boots of Striding and Springing, Goggles of Night) are free upgrades on top.
Most staves list a class restriction at attunement. Staff of the Magi, Staff of Power, and Staff of Fire all require a spellcasting class. The picker filters out items your class cannot attune to.
These are items from the System Reference Document 5.1, which is the freely licensed subset Wizards of the Coast released under Creative Commons. It includes most of the classic items players actually search for. Adventure-specific items (Robe of the Archmagi is in, certain newer items are not) are intentionally out of scope.
